Louisa Fogwell Goodridge was born in
Dartmouth in around 1840 working back from the census records - this page is
concerned with her ancestors. Click on the names above to go straight to

She had a number of brothers and
sisters and was the youngest child of Henry Goodridge and Jane Fogwell who
probably married in around 1815. Of Louisa's nine brothers and sisters no
fewer than five also carried the middle name Fogwell.
Henry Goodridge was baptised in
Paignton 26/1/1792, the sixth of eleven children of Alan Goodridge and
Elizabeth. Alan had married Elizabeth Galmpton in Paignton on
23/9/1780. Alan was himself the fifth child - baptised 16/5/1759 of
Richard Goodridge and his wife Grace. Interestingly, this couple appear to
have had two sets of twins. There were many Goodridges in Paignton but further analysis of these
suggests that they were all from one tree.
Judging by the census returns Jane was
born in 1797 or 1798. The Fogwell's were not a Dartmouth family and it
appears that Jane Fogwell was actually Jane Stokes Fogwill, from Totnes.
Jane Stokes Fogwill was baptised
20/11/1797 - the youngest child of John Fogwill and Elizabeth (nee Hawkins), who
were married 30/5/1781. John Fogwill was the eldest son of William Fogwill
and Agnes (nee Hooper). John Fogwell (or Fogwill) was a coal
merchant. One of his sons - Thomas - either set up on his own in this
trade in Dartmouth or extended the family business to that town. Henry
Goodridge was also a Coal Merchant - based on the entries in the registers for
his children's marriages.
As with the Goodridge's the spelling of the
surname varied with Jane's four brothers all shown as Fogwell, though her elder
sister (also Jane) was Fogwill
