SHORT ANCESTORS
Henry Goodridge Short married Ruth Payne in around 1903. Ruth was one of the younger daughters of George and Ann Payne (nee Seymour), a Baptist family from Stoke, near Wantage, Berkshire. In 1901 Ruth was in service as parlourmaid at Ridley House in Kingswear where her elder sister Elizabeth was the cook. For the Payne ancestors click here.
Henry worked with his father in the housebuilding business - as a carpenter, but on the death of his father John in 1922 the business (and money) went to his elder brother and sister (the will having been written many years before when he was just two years old). On Henry's death on 13th March 1922 - just two months after his father - his widow Ruth was left virtually penniless as Caroline and Bruce squandered the inheritance.
