John Eales Short married Louisa Fogwell Goodridge in Dartmouth in the early 1860's probably in the Presbyterian Church. For Louisa's descent please go to the Goodridge page
Like his father and elder brother John was in the building trade and he became a Master Builder & Carpenter
In 1871 John and Louisa were at 2 Alma Place with their daughter Caroline and Louisa's widowed mother Jane Goodridge but in 1881 the family lived at 3 Brixham Terrace, Kingswear, next door to his younger brother James, another Master Mason, who lived at number 2. In fact John was in partnership with his brother James but the two fell out over something to do with building work at the Methodist Church in Dartmouth and the feud between then lasted to their deaths.
The couple had moved again by 1901 - to New Road - and John was now more than a mason - he is a housebuilder.
John died on 5th January 1922 and is buried at
Kingswear.
This picture might be John and Louisa, the younger ladies are Maud and Ida

Caroline is said in the 1881 census to be a schoolteacher (at the age of 17). She subsequently married Edward Jewell, believed to be from a Northampton where his family were involved in the coal business and the couple returned to Kingswear. They had seven children - John, Dorothy, Winifred, Reginald, Clifford, Bruce and Roy.

Died as a baby in 1873
Married Millie, or Minnie, Gulley. They had four children all christened at Kingswear Methodist Church on 27/5/1913. These were:- Minnie Louisa (born 7/6/1899) Florence Josephine (born 8/6/1903), Fernley Harry and Geoffrey Bruce (both born 30/3/1913). Florence married and had two children, Fernley married and had at least a son but nothing is known about him. Most curious is Geoffrey who may have emigrated but who totally slipped from sight.

Fernley and Flo

Bruce was involved with Kingswear Rugby Club and is in the photo on the Kingswear page (second from right in the back row).
Here he is in later life - front left
Married Ruth Payne. Next in the direct line of descent, he and his wife have their own page
The extended family group - this photo must have
been taken about 1918; presumably for John Eales Short's eightieth birthday.
