Philip Henry Wills

WILLS ANCESTORS

Philip Henry was usually known as Harry. After the death of his mother it is likely that his elder sister was largely responsible for his bringing up. He left school at 12 but later attended night school. His original trade was as a millwright, (as was his father) but he later worked for a firm of engineers, Hamlyn's, in Buckfastleigh. When the engineering firm began to decline he moved to Kingswear to work for Simpson Strickland at their Noss Works.
Philip had already moved to Kingswear (living at Woodland Cottage) when he got married to Mary Ellen Michelmore on 24th June 1899. The marriage was at the Wesleyan Chapel in Buckfastleigh. Mary was 36, a teacher, daughter of Robert & Margaret. The following year - Q3 1900 Mary died. She is believed to be buried in Buckfastleigh.
In the 1901 Census he was living at 2 Hawarden Cottages with Caroline.
On the 30th March 1907 Philip married Margaret Ella Hill at the Parish Church in Lustleigh. It is not known how he met Margaret as she lived with her parents at Lustleigh. It is possible that they were introduced by Caroline as she, like Margaret, had been "in service" - though not in the same houses as far as is known. Philip Henry died 21/3/1955; Margaret Ella died 21/3/1961. Both are buried in Kingswear cemetery (unmarked grave)

Recollections by Archie Wills of his parents and life in Kingswear are on a separate page.
