Philip Henry was usually known as Harry. After the death of his mother it is likely that his elder sister was largely responsible for his bringing up. He left school at 12 but later attended night school. His original trade was as a millwright, (as was his father) but he later worked for a firm of engineers, Hamlyn's, in Buckfastleigh. While he was in Buckfastleigh he got married but his wife died young and childless - she is believed to be buried in Buckfastleigh.
When the engineering firm began to decline he moved to Kingswear to work for Simpson Strickland at their Noss Works. In the 1901 Census he was living at 2 Hawarden Cottages with Caroline.
It is not known how he met Margaret Ella Hill as she lived with her parents at Lustleigh. It is possible that they were introduced by Caroline as she, like Margaret, had been "in service" - though not in the same houses as far as is known. For more information about her ancestors click here.
Recollections by Archie Wills of his parents and life in Kingswear are on a separate page.
